Android is a complete, open mobile phone software stack from the Open Handset Alliance. Google’s Android platform is all set for an incredible growth in terms of number of users and will become the second most popular mobile operating system in three years down the line, if predictions made by an analyst firm come true.

Market research firm IDC predicted that the Google-owned Android platform will grow faster than all its rivals to reach the second spot by the year 2013, second only to Nokia’s Symbian. As of now, the mobile OS market is being dominated by Nokia-owned Symbian, followed by BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion, and Apple at the third spot.

By providing an open development platform, Android offers Symbiotic the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. We are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.

While availability of Android powered handsets in Africa is very low, Symbiotic can deliver solutions to any market.

Microsoft has joined with payment software vendor M-Com to push a mobile payment system that will be accepted by banks around the world. The two companies have built a software package called BankAnywhere which is based around Windows and Microsoft SQL Server, as well as Internet Information Services (IIS).The software is platform agnostic and will consist of software on the phone linking in to back-end services in banks. The software was announced at Sibos 2009 in Honk Kong.

It is clear that consumers in Asia and around the world have an insatiable demand for mobile financial services, especially payment transactions, said Adam Clark, chief executive of M-Com.

Banks must engage their customers and prospects in the mobile channel in the short term to ensure they profit from sustainable revenues and key customer segments that are adopting these services.

The mobile payment market is slowly taking off, as banks look to new payment systems to make up for declining revenues from credit cards and the high cost of traditional paper transactions.

With the increasing adoption of mobile applications running on smartphones, the mobile channel can no longer be ignored by banks, said Red Gillen, senior analyst at Celent.

Mobile payments continue to be at the top of the list of applications that will entrench mobile financial services in consumers daily lives, propelling it into the mainstream. As banks look to invest in this strategic area, vendors that can provide solutions which go beyond simple mobile banking informational services to address other value-added services such as bill payment will be the ones that come out on top.

Mobile Web Africa is a technology conference that was held in October 2009 in Sandton, South Africa to discuss the mobile web in Africa, how we can harness the potential of the Internet and applications on mobile devices. Mbugua Njihia our CEO was selected as a panelist and showcased some home grown innovations in the field of mobile advertising as well as social networking.

Why Mobile Web Africa?

Because it is an event that is tackling one of the single most important areas of technological development this world has witnessed. An area so fundamental that it is not unreasonable to imagine a future in which the vast majority of individuals, regardless of who and where they are, will have access to the greatest information resource ever available.
(alternatively they’ll at least be able to update their status on Facebook or Twitter… ) Like voice and SMS previously, having access to content or individuals and the ability to interact via a mobile phone will have a fundamental effect on each and every society.

The Key Themes @ Mobile Web Africa

1. How will the industry evolve to a point where the vast majority of people have access to the mobile web and the content they want to view?

2. How will the industry fully exploit existing and future opportunities?

3. How can PC or mobile based developers and start-ups monetise their innovation and creativity to grow in to companies that will drive the expansion of the ecosystem?

4. How can Operators, Original Equipment Manufacturers, global associations and other mobile powerhouses assist their smaller partners?

5. How can societal and economic problems be tackled by the development of the capabilities of
the mobile device?

6. What handsets, standards, networks and designs will allow consumers to successfully access the content and consume it?

7. How will the consumer be able to discover that content – through an Application, Browser, Search Engine, Advert, Social Network?

Some of the speakers and Panelists
This is the list of the individuals and organisation that will be either presenting or taking part in panel discussions at the event:
• Mr Herman Heunis, Chief Executive Officer, MXit
• Mr Marc Smith, Chief Social Scientist, Telligent
• Mr Rick Joubert, Executive Head, Mobile Advertising, Vodacom
• Mr Stephane Boyera, Program Manager, Web Foundation / W3C
• Mr Matthew Buckland, Head, 20FourLabs
• Mr Eric Cantor, Director, AppLab Uganda, Grameen Foundation

Why attend Mobile Web Africa?
Because at least one of these questions is relevant to you:
• How can I take advantage of the potential of the mobile web?
• How can I monetise my creativity?
• How can I harness the mobile web for developmental purposes?
• How can I drive ARPU up?
• How can I reach out to my core target market?
• How can I boost my user-base?
• How can I enhance my service?
• How can I generate revenue from my innovation?

And Mobile Web Africa offers you, as the potential attendee or sponsor, the opportunity to:
1. Meet and talk to the right people.
2. Listen to the individuals who are shaping the industry.
3. Connect with the companies that you can work with in the future
4. Ask your questions and enhance your understanding of the issues.
So, by spending two days at Mobile Web Africa, you’ll meet and reach out to your peers.
Those who have done it, are doing it or want to do it.

The Roundtable Format (a new style of event)

Mobile Web Africa promises to bring you a new event format:
• One which avoids those embarrassing sleepy moments;
• One which instead seats you on round-tables with your peers;
• One which will provide a buzzing and interactive conference room.

Including:
• 7 Scheduled “Discussion Periods” each lasting just under an hour.
• A mixture of traditional panel discussions and ‘interactive roundtable discussions’.
• Unrivaled interaction, networking opportunities and real outputs.

Hope you see you there!

Africa and the world at large is witnessing a revolution in mobile and e-payments. While in the rest of the world e-payments has been the norm for years with people holding multiple credit cards,in Africa, the story is different. Mobile payments have taken root and usage is growing by leaps and bounds, with the likes of Mpesa - a product of Safaricom having over 7 million registered users and Zap from Zain also making headway with over 1 million registered users.
For a lot of business out there, the nagging question has been how to integrate these payment mechanisms with their business systems, more so with the advent of increased internet usage and uptake of services that don’t require a physical presence such as wireless internet access.

Symbiotic Media has developed a gateway that can be customized to automate payments for both online and brick and motor businesses. The gateway is agnostic and can therefore by integrated with any choice payment mechanism and on any . We currently support Mpesa, Zap, MTN Mobile money, PayPal and Google Checkout, though adaptation to any local payment mechanism can be done.

Case study

………………………………………………………………………………………….
Sovaya Communications - a kenya based ISP rolled out a slew of innovative data products with equally competitive pricing plans. Their choice for receiving payments was the scratch card method which after a pilot period proved too cumbersome with the logistics and access to the consumer being key difficulties.
Symbiotic integrated the payment engine optimized for Mpesa that has seen Sovaya improve on collection, monthly renewals as well as making it easy to rope in new customers.

How so:

Depending on the plan that you have, whether monthly on a flat fee or charged per minute, you will need to make the payment to Sovaya. This would entail looking for a Sovaya scratch card vendor in your neighborhood or travel into town to make the payments at Sovaya offices.
With our payment gateway existing or new users who detect the signal can make the payment from the comfort of their mobile phone with the service and access details being sent back to the user via sms as well as being displayed onscreen in real-time. Instant payment, instant access! If you run out of “browsing juice” in the middle of the night, do not despair…your instant connectivity is only an sms away
Our gateway is also adapted for real-time payment and service activations for services such as pay tv – the likes of DSTV and Zuku.

………………………………………………………………………………………….

How our payment gateway works

Our payment gateway facilitates the transfer of information between a portal (such as a website, mobile phone or IVR service) and the Front End Processor or acquiring bank. When a customer orders a product from a payment gateway enabled seller or service provider, the payment gateway performs a variety of tasks to process the transaction:

A customer places order on website by pressing the ‘Submit Order’ or equivalent button, or perhaps enters their card details using an automatic phone answering service.

If the order is via a website, the customer’s web browser encrypts the information to be sent between the browser and the merchant’s webserver. This is done via SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption.

The merchant then forwards the transaction details to our payment gateway.

Our payment gateway forwards the transaction information to the processor used by the service provider.

Provider validates the transfer / payment

The processor forwards the response to the payment gateway.

Our payment gateway receives the response, and forwards it on to the website (or whatever interface was used to process the payment) where it is interpreted and a relevant response then relayed back to the cardholder and the merchant.

The entire process typically takes 2–3 seconds
